Be Free, Be Linux!!!

I have heard many people talking about free software , but I wasn't really sure its definition and its benefits, that's why I decided to investigate and publish it on my blog.

The definition published by Free Software Fundation in february 1986 had two points:
The word "free" in our name does not refer to price; its refer to freedom. First the freedom to copy a program and redistribute it to your neighbors, so that they can use it instead of it controlling you; for this, the source code must be made available to you.
Now the modern definition has four point; it defines free software by wether or not the recipient has the freedom to:
  • Run the program, for any purpose.
  • Study how the program works.
  • Redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
  • Improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole comunity benefits.
Many people who used Free Software they asure that Free Sotware like Linux is much better than Windows, people whose are not going to change to Linux because is free(many people even don't pay for Windows) but maybe because they see new and good characteristics that Window does not have, so I searched some reasons in the internet, and here we have:
  • Forget about virus.
  • Linux can be so stable that the majority of users will never see their operating system to be hung, even several years.
  • Protection.
  • Linux cost anything.
Those are just a few of benefits that we can have in our hands, let's try to be free!!!

Going green

The statistics that for every dollar you spend on hardware you will spend $70 to power and cool that hard work over its life and that is project to grow over the next four years to the point where it will be a dollar spent on power and cooling for every dollar that you spend in hardware. Couple that with the fact that in many cases IT Managers or Data Center Managers have not been receiving their fair share of the energy bill.

The second set of issues are opefrational. Many customers simply cannot deploy another server device, another storage array into their data center because they cannot get any more power into the data center or they cannot dissipate the heat that is being generate with the data center.

Finally there is a set of global issues. It is undeniable that the planet climate is changing and that man has a role in that. so people are very concerned and in fact in the global war for talent it is interesting to note that recent surveys show that the number one criteria for a college graduate evaluating a company to work for beyond compesation and and health benefits was how green is the company that I'm going to work for. so in a global war for talent your ability to demosntrate that you're green to your customers and to potential employees is critically important.

As an Engineer, I'm commited to create products that are dramatically smarter, safer and more eco responsible because we need products desing to power usage to our global take-back and recycling programs.
